About

This blog is for parents or other folks raising children – grandparents, aunts, uncles, foster parents, guardians. I am a mother of two. I am also a child and adolescent psychologist in private practice for over twenty years. Over the years, I feel like I have heard and seen it all. What I love about what I do is getting to know so many different kids. I mean, I really get to know them. And I love helping families work better together. The inspiration for this blog actually comes from my child clients. I’ve been collecting quotes from the kids I see in therapy since I was in training in the mid 1980’s. These quotes highlight important lessons that we, as parents, can learn from the words and wisdom of children.

I would love to read your comments, and, if you have any suggestions for topics you’d like me to cover, post them. I’ll do my best to address them all.

Enjoy your reading and happy parenting!

  2. By chance, how did you find my blog? I just started it last month and have used zero tools to promote it. Just curious.

My son is 15yrs. Old. He was homeschooled along with his other brothers. In the 9th.grade he went to a charter public school. Seemed to be doing really well at first. Then, we started to notice a decline in miod and personality. By the way I pushed for an evalution in homeschool setting. So, he currently has an IEP for focus and organization. Otherwise a very bright curious loving human being. But, tried marijuana then in a two week span started with pills. This is when we had to pull him out of school. Now he is back to homeschool. Therapy is in place currently. A phychologist diagnosed depression, anxiety, and ADHD. My son declined taking the recommended prescription of Prozac. Currently he is taking nothing. I dont see improvement and now he said last night after a dinner with extended family says ge just cant stand being around alot of people. Says he can handle the four of us (mom,dad,2brothers) but thats it. It took alot for him to say that and open up that way. And, believe me I try over and over to help him through this…i call him his own personal bungi cord…no matter what he does…I am here. But, am i doing enough. Am i doing the right things. My son is a full mixed plate I just want my son back. Help!!

Kathy, so sorry to hear that your family is going through this difficult time. I can’t really comment with any specifics because I don’t know your family, but generally speaking, you ask really excellent questions that should be addressed to the treating therapist. If you haven’t read my post about psychiatric medications, it might be helpful. Many of the questions that I suggest parents ask about meds also apply to therapy and can be addressed to your son’s psychologist: “Why did you choose this type of therapy?” “What are the target symptoms?” “How will we monitor progress?”. There is a fine line between being patient (overcoming depression and anxiety takes time!) and continuing too long with a treatment approach that is not working. Talk to your son’s therapist (with your son’s permission of course!) and then trust your instincts. It sounds like you are doing a great deal to support him. Keep fighting the good fight, Mom!

Thank you for your guidance in asking the right questions. Also, for the support. I will definitely keep up the fight and follow my instincts!
